20 Bible Verses to Shatter Shame

Do you struggle with feeling ashamed of yourself or your past? Have you ever wondered if there was freedom from this deep sense of being wrong or inadequate? The Bible makes it clear that when we bring our shame and sins to God, he not only forgives us, he removes our offenses far from us, and remembers them no more.

Here are 20 verses to help you shatter the feelings of shame.

1. Ezra 9:6

“O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for my iniquities have risen higher than my head, and my guilt has mounted up to the heavens.”

2. Psalm 32:5

“I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.”

3. Psalm 31:1

In you, O Lord, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me!

4. 2 Corinthians 7:10

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

Prayer:

Lord, my shame and guilt have led to me trying to hide myself from you. I know that separation from you is the Enemy’s plan to fill my life with death and destruction. Please flood my heart and mind with knowledge of how deeply you love me, and how I am safe to confess my sins to you because you will never shame me.

5. Isaiah 54:4

The Lord says, “Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and your reproach you will remember no more.

6. Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove my transgressions from me.

7. Lamentations 3:22-23

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;  his mercies never come to an end;  they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

8. Hebrews 8:12

The Lord says, “I will be merciful to your unrighteousness, and your sins and your lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

Prayer:

Because of Christ, my sins are totally forgotten by God. I am permanently right with God. I cannot out sin Christ’s redemption and grace. Even if I sin and make poor choices today, I know that He is faithful to remove the shame of my sins from me and that tomorrow is a fresh start. God’s mercies are new each day.

9. Romans 5:8

But God shows his love for me in that while I was still a sinner, Christ died for me.

10. Ephesians 2:10

I am his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that I should walk in them.

11. John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

12. Psalm 34:5

When I look to the Lord, I am radiant, and my face shall never be ashamed.

13. John 10:10

Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that you may have life and have it abundantly.”

Prayer:

The Enemy wants me to believe that I am wrong and inadequate, but Christ gave his life for me while I was hopelessly lost in my offenses because he longs to draw me close to him and to enable me to do the good works he prepared for me. God loves me and delights in who I am.

14. Psalm 18:16-19

He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.

15. Romans 10:11

Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in Christ will not be put to shame.”

16. Romans 6:4

I was buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, I too might walk in newness of life.

17. Romans 8:1

“There is, therefore, now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

18. 1 John 1:9

“If I confess my sins, He is faithful and just to forgive me my sins and to cleanse me from all unrighteousness.”

Prayer:

Father God, please open my eyes so that I can see this new life Christ has given me. Please open my eyes to see myself as you see me: beloved and delighted in. I confess that I have believed Satan’s lies of condemnation and worthlessness and I desire to have this cleansed from me.

19. Isaiah 61:7

The Lord says, “Instead of your shame, you shall have double honor, and instead of confusion, you shall rejoice in your portion. Therefore in your land, you shall possess double; everlasting joy shall be yours.”

20. 1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen people, a Royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
